In 1922 Barron Gift Collier, a wealthy streetcar advertising entrepreneur, bought the town of Everglade from the Storter family. He envisioned a town that would enable him to complete the Tamiami Trail and to help develop the new Collier County, most of which he owned. Barron Collier died in 1939, but the town is eternally grateful to him for his vision and love of the area.
