Everglades City was, and continues to be, first and foremost a fishing village. The original Native American inhabitants fished throughout the 10,000 islands. The pioneering families fished for both food and sport. Entrepreneur Barron Collier first came to this area in 1911 to fish and hunt, subsequently purchasing all of Everglades City and establishing it as the first Collier County seat. Even today, fishermen come from all over the world to catch snook, redfish, tarpon, and trout.  Tourism, recreational fishing, and commercial fishing are the primary revenue generators for the small town of Everglades City.
