The original post office was established in 1932 and housed inside the Gaunt Company General Store. A disastrous fire destroyed the general store and the post office in 1953. Postmaster Sidney H. Brown quickly moved operations into a small, nearby storage shed used for irrigation pipes by the J.T. Gaunt Company tomato farm. What started as a temporary fix became permanent with local residents building shelves and mail cubbies inside. When the Tamiami Trail was widened, the tiny building was moved back to its current spot using a wheelbarrow.
