The Calusa Tribe, then the Seminoles, were the first people of this area. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Seminoles farmed along Potato Creek (now the Barron River) and traded goods at the G. W. Storter General Store (now the Rod & Gun Club) and Ted Smallwood in
Chokoloskee. The Seminoles were instrumental in assisting with the route through the Everglades for the completion of the Tamiami Trail
and participated in the celebration on April 26, 1928.
