Ted Smallwood, purchasing property in Chokoloskee from the Santini family in 1899, opened his store in 1906. This trading post served both the local community and the Native Americans whose language he learned. The present store was built in 1917 and raised on stilts in 1924 after a hurricane. After the store closed in 1982, Ted’s granddaughter Lynn McMillin restored the building as a museum.
