Deaconess Harriet Bedell (1875-1969) was an Episcopal missionary who worked with Native Americans in Oklahoma and Alaska before coming to Everglades City in 1932 to establish the Glades Cross Mission, as well as a mission in Marco and Goodland. She was honored by the Seminole and Miccosukee for her dedication to tribal dignity and education. A plaque at the Museum of the Everglades notes her designation as a “Great Floridian.”
